A relatively new innovation within the medical cannabis industry is to produce cannabinoids in yeast. University of California, Berkeley, have produced synthetic biological engineered brewer’s yeast to produce cannabinoids.

Using this novel method, researchers have created both THC and non-psychoactive CBD, as well as new cannabinoids that are not to be found in the cannabis plant itself.

The real benefit of this method seams to be the cost involved in the production of cannabinoids, according to researchers. Feeding only on sugar, the yeast are an easy and cheap way to produce pure cannabinoids, which today are costly to process and extract from cannabis flowers.
